CARTER HIGHLIGHTS SUCCESS AT CLAY COURT NATIONALS
Smith Stearns Tennis Academy students shine in national tournaments.
July 28, 2009 -- Smith Stearns Tennis Academy student Hayley Carter continued to impress this past week at the USTA National Clay Court Championships in the girls 14 and under division, that was held July 19-25 in Plantation, Florida.
Carter placed 5th in the singles event and 4th in the doubles event at the prestigious national tournament. Her only singles loss came to eventual champion Kelsey Laurente of Miramar, Florida.
Carter was also awarded the tournament’s overall sportsmanship award for her positive attitude and honorable character that she portrays while competing.
Four other Smith Stearns students had successful tournaments in the girls 16 and under division of the USTA National Clay Court Championships.
Molly O’Koniewski and Kaitlyn Ray placed 4th in the doubles event. They also both had top 16 finishes in the singles event.
Kendal Woodard partnered with Jessica Northcutt of Alpharetta, Georgia, to place third in the doubles event, earning a bronze ball.
Leyla Erkan also had a successful doubles tournament finishing in the final eight.
Ray, like Carter, was awarded the tournament’s overall sportsmanship award.
“We are very proud of the success that the girls had this past week at the Clay Court Nationals,” said B.J. Stearns, Academy Director. “Not only their success with where they placed in the tournament, but the fact that both Hayley and Kaitlyn both received the tournament’s overall sportsmanship award, really shows that they represent themselves in the highest manner on the court. We couldn’t be prouder.”
