2017, Wow what a year!

As the ball dropped and 2017 came to a close its worth reminiscing on the 2017 Smith Stearns students produced. The year saw them take home four Gold Balls, eight Silver Balls, and two Bronze Balls at 2017 Super Nationals.

Loeb Reaches #1 Ranking Nationally, Carter Goes for Triple Crown, Lewis and O’Keefe Selected At-Large

Joining other alumni who have qualified for the post-season in college tennis with their respective teams, four  former students of the Smith Stearns Tennis Academy in Hilton Head, South Carolina were selected to the Division I singles and doubles championships Wednesday evening. Smith Stearns Students Take Home Five Titles at the Southern Winter Closed

Smith Stearns Students Make 2016 Their Best Year Yet

Students of Smith-Stearns Tennis Academy brought home the title 12 times at USTA National Tournaments, 8 times in ITF tournaments and 77 times at the Sectional level.   2016 proved to be a year where the students and coaches of Smith Stearns Tennis Academy saw their hard work on the court and in the gym come to fruition. Singh Makes Final of Metropolia Orange Bowl, Semi’s Eddie Herr

Smith-Stearns Tennis Academy student, Vikash Singh, made history at this year’s Metropolia Orange Bowl and Eddie Herr–the two most prestigious 16 & under tournaments in the world.    Vikash Singh has spent the last two years of his life residing on Hilton Head Island training at Smith Stearns Tennis Academy and studying at Heritage Academy where he is a junior with a 4.7 GPA. Students Selected to Southern Cup & Nike National Masters

Three Smith Stearns students were selected to play in the Southern Junior Cup which was held the past two weekends in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Sara McClure (girls 12’s), Catie Meighan (girls 14’s), and Cameron Kriscunas (girls 16’s) represented their home state of South Carolina in the tournament. Students Dominate SC State Junior Open

      Over 25 Smith Stearns students participated in the SC Junior State Open, which was held from September 20-23 in Charleston, South Carolina. Students Win 4 Titles at VDM Classic

Smith Stearns students had an opportunity to play a tournament close to home when the VDM Classic was held on Hilton Head from September 13-15. Twenty two of our students competed in the local tournament and they came out with a total of four championship titles. Raleigh Level 3 & September Bullfrog Update

    Smith Stearns students participated in the 31st Annual Raleigh Racquet Club Junior Championships held in Raleigh from September 7-8 as well as the Bullfrog Designated held in Little Rock and Memphis from September 6-9.     At the RRC Championships Sara McClure made it all the way to the finals of the girls 12’s singles championship before barely losing her final match in a third set tiebreaker. Students Compete in Labor Day Events

Labor weekend marked a big tournament weekend for our students as they participated in events all across the country! Kriscunas and Loeb Place 2nd at Southern Closed

Cameron Kriscunas and Robert Loeb both placed second in doubles at the 16 and under Southern Closed Championship held June 15-21 in Rome, Georgia.   Partnering with McKenna Jones, Kriscunas won five straight matches including a third set tiebreaker win over the 2nd seeds to earn a place in the finals. Schafer Earns First ATP Point

Andrew Schafer has had a great junior career and now he is continuing his success on the Pro Circuit. This past month he has qualified for two USTA Pro Circuit Events in Vero Beach and Amelia Island.   In the Vero Beach $10,000 Schafer had a win over one of the top ranked junior players in the United States Spencer Papa, who was also ranked as high as #15 in the world this year. Carter Finals Local Pro Circuit Event

  Hayley Carter was the local favorite at the $10,000 USTA Pro Circuit Event held May 27th-June 2nd at Van der Meer and made it all the way to the final match.   Carter dominated players from the Canada, the United States, France, and Japan all in straight sets to earn a spot in the finals where she lost to Russian Yana Koroleva 7-5,6-4.   She was watched all week by families from the academy and members of the local … read more

Shulman Wins North Hills Championship

    Smith Stearns students competed at the North Hills Junior Championships (SL3)  in Raleigh, North Carolina from April 6th through 7th.   Ariel Shulman had a fantastic tournament dominating the white draw in the girls 16 and under division. In the quarterfinals she knocked off top seeded Savannah Taranto 6-3,6-1, then defeated Anna Harmon 6-2, 6-4.   Smith Stearns students had an impressive tournament at the Bullfrog Designated in Columbus, Georgia, held March 29th through April 1st.     Allie Burak dominated the girls 16 and under event winning all of her matches in straight sets. In the championship match she came back from a 5-0 deficit in the first set to defeat #1 seed Suzanne Zendoni 7-6, 6-1. Pegula Earns First WTA Wins

Congratulations to former Smith Stearns student Jessie Pegula for scoring the two biggest wins of her pro career to date. After winning two matches to qualify, Jessie won her first maindraw WTA match ever at the Family Circle Cup in Charleston defeating Garbine Muguruza of Spain, 6-7 (2), 6-4, 7-5. March has been one busy month with our students playing in a lot of tournaments and having some fantastic results! Carter Earns Wild Card into Family Circle Cup; Mid-February Update

Hayley Carter won the 2013 Dunlop Junior Championships held February 16th and 17th in Daniel Island, South Carolina. The southern level 3 event doubles as a wild card tournament for the girls 18 and under, with the winner earning a qualifying wildcard into the WTA’s Family Circle Cup.   The tournament always has a strong field as all the girls are fighting for that one wild card spot. Former Students Shine at ITA National Team Indoors

The final of the 2013 ITA National Indoor Championships held in Charlottesville, Virginia on February 11th was surely one to remember. Hampton Drake & Hayley Carter were honored as USTA/South Carolina award winners this month. Hampton received the Boys Player of the Year Award while Hayley was honored with the Wilton McKinney Award.   The annual awards given by USTA South Carolina are intended to recognize individuals who made outstanding contributions to tennis. Jones Reaches Quarterfinals of Orange Bowl

Jess Jones reached the singles and doubles quarterfinals of the boys 16 and under division of the Orange Bowl International Championship held this past week in Plantation, Florida. Fisher a Finalist at Eddie Herr

Jackson Wins Fall Southern Closed

Katelyn Jackson won the girls 18 and under championship of the Fall Southern Closed held November 21-25 in Louisville, Kentucky.   As a fifth seed Jackson defeated #1 seeded Kenya Jones in the semifinals 6-2,6-2, before dominating Kirsten Ward in the finals 6-1,6-3.   By winning the Southern Closed Championship, this marks Jackson’s biggest win in the 18’s. She has moved up to #15 in the USTA/Southern Section in the 18 and under division, while still being eligible to play … read more

Carter Wins SC ITF & Finals Pro Circuit Event

  Hayley Carter dominated the competition winning her second straight title at the ITF Junior Circuit Event held in Columbia, South Carolina from November 3rd-11th. She beat American Mia Horvit in the quarterfinals 6-4,6-1, and Rianna Valdes in the semifinals 6-3,6-1. In the championship match she defeated Kaitlin McCarthy 6-2, 6-4 to claim the title. O'Keefe Top Ranked Player in Section

      Harrison O’Keefe travelled back home to Virginia to compete in the USTA/Mid Atlantic Championship from October 13-15 and came out with the championship trophy. O’Keefe beat Brett Moorhead 6-3,6-3 in the final match to take the title. With the win he will now be the #1 ranked junior in the Boys 18 and under division of the Mid Atlantic Section. Drake Takes First Bullfrog Title in 18's

      Hampton Drake had a fantastic transition into the boys 18 and under division when he captured the title at his first USTA Southern Bullfrog Designated in the 18’s. Gould Wins Gold Again; Carter Claims Bronze

July Highlights: Drake Reaches Doubles Final at National Clay Courts

Hampton Drake made it to the finals of doubles at the USTA National Clay Courts in the boys 16 and under division that was held in July in Delray Beach, Florida. Mariana Gould has been having quite the month. Academy Students Dominate at Arkansas Qualifier

Smith Stearns students Mary Wright, Jackie Carr, and Katelyn Jackson travelled back home to Arkansas to compete in the Arkansas Junior Qualifier that was held in Little Rock from May 25th – 28th.  They surely didn’t take their trip lightly as Mary Wright won the girls 18 and under championship and Jackie Carr won the girls 16 and under championship defeating Katelyn Jackson in the finals. Carter Wins Dunlop Championships Earning Wildcard into Family Circle Cup

Hayley Carter won the Dunlop Junior Championships this past weekend beating fellow academy student Mariana Gould in a hard fought battle in the final match.
